BEHIND THE LENS: HELMUT NEWTON

PROFILE PRIVÉ: HELMUT NEWTON

HELMUT NEWTON (1920-2004) - fashion photographer

Newton once said, "Those who write about photography write only for those who write about photography." As a German boy born with an insatiable lust for success, Newton was far from concerned about romanticism and complicated analyses. His photographs are not fantastical, nor are they mockeries of society; his images are essentially descriptions of what sees and only knows. He has his own particular way of idealizing a reality which is not always ideal.

While the cliché of sixties style photography swirled and jumped, Newton remained audacious to his style. Commonly referred to as "porno chic", his photographs of women are not demeaning, but more a part of Newton's past and subconscious. Each of his images draws from life experiences, thoughts, and a super Id seeking surface.

Newton photographed for the sake of photography. He wanted his pictures seen, and not just credited as a fashion image meant for marketing. He sought to please no one but himself, and his photos will continue to leave lasting impressions long after the image is forgotten.

PHOTOGRAPHY IS FICTION

Images are everything. Photography is an illusion, even if it leaves nothing to the imagination.

Cinema Exposé is a platform for the art of fashion photography. Exposed and unassumed, the collections are a display of each artist's creative insight. Fashion's negative through imagery: the photography anthology.
